Many people like to keep track of the temperature in their environment. Whether it be for professional, medical or personal use a room thermometer is needed. In a nursing home, for example, a lot of senior citizens can not be too cold or too hot due to bacteria and germs. A room thermometer is needed to help keep track of the temperature. The same thing can be the case for personal use in someone's home. In a professional environment it will keep the office or business at a comfortable temperature for customers and employees.

The history of the room thermometer started in the eleventh century when people began to experiment with the nature of air. In one test, the expansion and contraction of air caused the water placed in tubes to change; when the water changed it measured the amount of air which controls the hotness and coldness in the room. Later on a man named Galileo produced one of the first room thermometers that measured heat that had not yet risen. This is a very popular room thermometer that many people have reinvented to use as an antique decoration. Some of them come with beads or other jewels to add some style to the thermometers.

Many room thermometers were invented from that point on. Not one of them was truly accurate until a man named Daniel G. Fahrenheit produced a scale to measure temperature which had twelve degrees in between boiling and body temperature. But a few years later Ander Celsius invented the scale that is used to measure room temperature. It starts at zero and goes to one hundred degrees.

A room thermometer with liquid mercury in it is a common way to measure temperature in a room. A lot of times people hang them on the wall or they are placed on a shelf at high level. If the mercury thermometer is opened up it can be very dangerous because the liquid can cause health issues. It must carefully be disposed of because it can cause liver, lung and kidney damage. Sometimes it might cause memory loss. The room thermometer filled with alcohol is safer if it is broken. The alcohol is less toxic and easier to clean up. The safest room thermometer is the digital thermometer though. It is the latest invented and is very easy to read. There are many types that can fit any one's style. They can be bought at just about any retail store and online.
